So, how do you spend your time when you are living in Jakarta, Indonesia for 5 years? You learn the local pastimes, such as Hand 'n Foot Game.
This is exactly what oil drilling field consultant Durwood Miller and his wife, Joyce. Durwood was actually stationed in Balikpapin, Indonesia when the couple first learned about this exciting, fun and often challenging card game. This was an area of the world that lacked the modern conveniences that we had taken for granted in a few years ago; like television, movie theatres and discotheques.
This was really nothing all that new for the Millers because Durwood's job often uprooted him and his family in order to relocate him to another area where his knowledge and expertise could be utilized. So, no matter where they found themselves, they always tried to make the best of it and Indonesia would be no different. Then, they learned this fantastic card game. Hand 'n Foot became a new way of life for them.
Each time the Millers would play Hand 'n Foot, the people they played with all seemed to have different rules. Sometimes these rules would miraculously change in the middle of a game. Joyce states, "It finally came to the point when we had to ask for the house rules before we started to play the game." Once they knew the house rules and had refined the various other rules of play they encountered, people began writing them and asking for the rules. "Hey, there could be something to this," they thought and they were right.
Now retired and living in DeCordova, TX, the couple now spends their retirement not being very retired at all. They share this game with the world and sell the game with cards that have been made exclusively for their company. They also send house rules along with the game, so there's no confusion.
