Some card games have been played and enjoyed for centuries. Others have a much more recent history. Deuces is a game that falls into the second category. Developed in the coastal region of China during the 1980s, it has since been a game that has enjoyed popularity all over the world.
Deuces can be played with as few as 2 players or as many as four, with four being the ideal number for the game. However, unlike Hand ‘n Foot, there are no partnerships involved. It is a climbing game, played with a standard 52 card deck. However, the cards are valued slightly differently, with the ranking running as follows from high to low: 2, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, and 3 being the lowest card. The suits are also ranked with spades being the highest followed by hearts, clubs, and diamonds. The object of the game is to get rid of all the cards in your hand first, or at least have the fewest number of cards left when someone else goes out.
Cards may be played one at a time, or they may be played in groups of either two, three, or five. The card game is also made interesting because players may ask each other at any time how many cards each player has left and the answer must be made honestly. While Deuces offers a nice change of pace for many card players, it lacks the benefit of incorporating large groups of people such as Hand ‘n Foot does, and may be slightly too complicated for families with smaller children to play together. It is a great choice for families with older children, or after a small dinner party.
